Welcome back to another exciting year of learning in the Arts at Wainuiomata High!
We had a huge year in 2019 (so huge that we never found the time to update this website) with the implementation of a completely new integrated junior curriculum and junior MPLD (My Personal Learning Day). Our juniors produced some awesome work and we have fine-tuned our courses to make them even better this year. Oh, and we put on our first school production in years!
Grease was a huge success and our students did the school proud. Many hours of preparation and practice went into the show, with nearly everyone involved taking part in a production for the first time. We learnt a lot, and hope to build on that success in coming years. A huge congratulations to the students who gave so much time and energy to create something truly magical on stage.
On that note - a special welcome to our passionate new Dance/Drama teacher Lucy Everett, who joins us fresh out of university. We're excited to work with you, and your students will benefit hugely from the energy you bring to the role.
This year we are implementing some new senior courses in the Arts faculty, with courses such as 'Turangawaewae', 'There's No Place Like Home', 'Showcase', and 'Messages in Music'. With the new semester-based timetable students are able to choose a wider range of courses that interest them, leading to more new students trying out the Arts.
This year we are also helping students plan and create their own arts projects within school-wide MPLD every Wednesday. This is a daunting but exciting prospect for both teachers and students. What would you choose to learn if you could learn about anything? That's the question we're tackling at present, and already it seems there are lots of passionate kids out there wanting to do something arty with their Wednesdays. Stay tuned for more MPLD updates later in the year.
